CLARENDON — An outpouring of support by community members has led to a fundraising effort to help a Clarendon family who lost their home in a fire Monday afternoon.
Jennifer Byrne and Karen Steever — after learning that their friend Deb Lebel White, husband Stephen, and their three children, and Deb’s sister, Linda Hampton, had lost all their possessions in a house fire — quickly started to gather their resources to help them out.
“As soon as we heard from Deb, everyone wanted to know what they needed and it snowballed into a fundraiser,” Byrne said. “We are doing this to help our friend.”
She said at times like this social networking websites can be good to spread the word quickly.
A post office box was set up Tuesday so that monetary donations and gifts cards could be sent to the family and an account at Merchants Bank was opened to receive direct donations.
“It’s called Lebel White Family Fund,” Byrne said. “Anyone who wants to donate can go into the bank and donate.”
The pair also created a page on Facebook to provide a series of updates on how the family is doing as well as specifications on what they are hoping to collect.
“Right now they need the immediate stuff — a change of clothes, shoes,” Byrne said.
For clothes they are looking for sizes 7/8 for girls, 10/12 for girls, 10/12 for boys, women size 12 for pants and large tops. Men pants size 42 by 34 long, XL shirts and chef pants too.
Larger donations — like home furnishings — will also be accepted, but they are waiting on more information from the family as to when, Byrne said.
A pig roast fundraiser to benefit the family and Meals on Wheels will be held from 1 to 9 p.m., Sunday, April 21, at the Moguls Sports Pub in Killington. Admission for adults is $20 and $10 for children.
Donations can be sent to Lebel/White Family Fund, P.O. Box 24, North Clarendon, VT 05759. Small items and clothing can be dropped off between 6 and 7 p.m. today at the Clarendon Elementary School Cheer Banquet.
More information can be found on the Lebel-White Family Support page on Facebook.
