A 34-year-old man is due in Rutland criminal court this afternoon to face a robbery charge after police said he allegedly held up the Wooden Barrel Country Store in Chittenden.

Police said the incident leading to the charge took place around 7:30 p.m. Monday when a clerk reported a man had robbed the store at knifepoint. Police said shortly after arriving they gathered information on two suspects, Scott A. Hughes and a woman. Several hours after the robbery, police said they saw Hughes' vehicle at a motel in Rutland.

When police said they tried to contact Hughes and the woman, Hughes fled out a window and led police on a short chase before he was caught. Police said they got a warrant to search the vehicle and Hughes' motel room and found cash in the room hidden inside the toilet tank.

Hughes was taken to the Rutland jail where he is being held on $200,000 bail pending his arraignment today on a charge of assault and robbery with a weapon.
