BRATTLEBORO — Brattleboro is putting off a decision on repairing the ailing Nelson Withington Skating Rink in the Vermont community because the only estimate came in $100,000 more than townspeople had approved.

Recreation and Parks Director Carol Lolatte told the Select Board only one bid came in to upgrade the rink, for $471,000.

In March the community’s town meeting representatives approved spending $364,000 for the upgrades.

Town Manager Sondag said it appears the town will receive a $100,000 grant to help pay for the rink repairs.

The Brattleboro Reformer reported that at the end of last winter both compressors failed and the town had to invest about $7,500 in the rink to keep the equipment going.
