Low-income Vermonters eligible for gas discount
SOUTH BURLINGTON - Low-income Vermont Gas Systems customers may qualify for a 20 percent discount off the standard residential rate, the company announced today.
The rate was created as a result of a Vermont Public Service Board initiative to help lower energy costs for the most financially vulnerable natural gas customers.
Although the cost of natural gas is lower than either heating oil or propane, the special rate will help lower-income Vermonters save an additional 20 percent," said Stephen Wark, communications director for Vermont Gas.
According to the company, the residential rate is currently 40 percent less than heating oil and 53 percent less than propane.
Eligibility for the program will be determined by the Department for Children and Families. The maximum gross monthly income is 185 percent of the federal poverty level, based on household size.
