BENSON — Vermont State Police say they are searching for a Castleton man who is believed to have stabbed a homeowner on Route 22A.

Police say William Tyler, the 36-year-old owner of the home, told police that Tia Maher, 40, stabbed him during an early morning altercation inside the home.

Police didn’t describe the altercation, but they said that Tyler arrived at the Castleton Family Health Center at just before 8 a.m. Monday with a single stab wound to his lower abdomen.

Attempts to find Maher have proven unsuccessful and police say they believe he fled the area by boarding a local bus in Rutland with an unknown destination.

Police are seeking to obtain a warrant for his arrest on a felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Maher is described as an Asian man with short brown hair and brown eyes. He stands about 5-feet, 10-inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds with a slender build and dark complexion. It’s not known what he’s wearing but police believe he has injuries to his face, including a swollen right eye.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call state police at 773-9101.
