RANDOLPH — Burley R. Barnard, 95, died Thursday, July 11, 2013, at Menig Extended Care in Randolph.
He was born May 7, 1918, in Bristol, the son of Robert S. and Etta (Hallock) Barnard.
He graduated from Randolph High School in 1937 and then worked at Claflins Store and W.E. Lamson Furniture Store, both in Randolph.
Mr. Barnard married Joyce Simmons Sept. 28, 1939, in Randolph; Mrs. Barnard died in 1994. He married Rachel (Hutchinson) Terry Oct. 20, 2001.
In 1943, he began work for Central Vermont Public Service as an operator at the Bethel hydroelectric generating station and later became a meter reader until being named a utility man until retiring in 1980. He was then employed as a funeral attendant at Day Funeral Home for over 20 years.
He was a member of Randolph Fish & Game Club, International Order of Odd Fellows and Montague Golf Club.
In Randolph, Mr. Barnard played for the town baseball team and later coached the town’s basketball team in 1950, the high school basketball team in 1952 and 1953, and was instrumental in starting Little League. He served as director of Alumni Athletic Field and was a past president of Randolph High School Alumni Association.
Survivors include his wife of Montpelier; a son, David Barnard of Randolph; a stepdaughter, Ann Houston of Jericho; two grandsons, eight step-great-grandchildren and 10 step-great-great-grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by a brother, Galen Barnard, and a stepdaughter, Jane Shepard.
The graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 14, in Pleasant View Cemetery, Randolph. There are no calling hours.
