The current version of the House farm bill includes a dangerous amendment authored by Rep. Steve King, a Republican from Iowa, who proposes to undo years of commonsense state legislation that protects animals and our environment, and protects us from food safety concerns. These issues matter tremendously to consumers, which makes Rep. King’s actions even more reprehensible.

Since our Sen. Patrick Leahy will probably be in the bill’s conference committee, he has stated he’ll work to remove the King language from the final version of the farm bill — a commitment he should be lauded for. It’s my sincere hope that other Vermont lawmakers take a similar pledge and work to get rid of this draconian farm bill amendment.
