MONTPELIER — Gov. Peter Shumlin and the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department are making 405 hunters happy as they conduct the state’s annual lottery drawing for moose hunting permits.

The drawing happens Thursday at the Statehouse. Officials will pick 355 people to win regular season permits and 50 permits for archery season. Participants paid $10 or $25 for a chance to win, depending on residency, and winners must purchase permits for either $100 or $350.

Those who don’t win Thursday have another chance to snag a permit. The state also will auction off five additional permits by Aug. 21. The minimum bid is $1,500, and winners usually pay at least $4,000.
