Woman allegedly stole TV and truckAugust 06,2013Staff Report
A woman who police say stole a television from Walmart before commandeering a truck to get away from store security denied seven criminal charges in Rutland criminal court.
Brandy L. Ritchie, 27, of Rutland pleaded innocent last week to two counts of retail theft, two counts of trespassing, two counts of violating court-ordered conditions of release and a charge of operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.
Judge Theresa DiMauro set bail at $5,000 for Ritchie, who remains behind bars.
Rutland Police said Ritchie stole an air conditioner from Walmart, where she had previously been served with a no-trespass order, on July 26. Police say she returned to the store three days later and tried to walk out of the store with a 32-inch flat-screen television she hadn’t paid for. The TV was worth $278.
Police said Ritchie climbed into a truck driven by a James Braley, 60, who told police that she told him to drive.
But as Braley was trying to leave the parking lot he was blocked by a Walmart security agent, police said. Braley said Ritchie ordered him to back up but when he did so he struck a vehicle behind him, police said.
When he exited to check on the damage, Ritchie allegedly climbed behind the wheel and drove off, leaving Braley behind.
Soon after, police said, they located the truck on Cottage Street and the television in a home on the street, but it would be days before Ritchie was located.MORE IN This Just In
