    Project complete, lake

    reopens to swimming

TOWNSHEND A Vermont lake closed to swimmers after flooding from Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 filled it with silt has reopened.

Officials say swimming has resumed at Townshend Lake after a long-awaited dredging project was finished but swimmers only have a few more weeks to enjoy the water.

The recreation area will be closing for the season on Sept. 1.

The silt from Irene made the water too shallow and unsafe for swimming.

The Brattleboro Reformer reported that officials had planned to have the dredging work done in June but the work was weather dependent and the rainy summer caused delays.
