    Daniel J. McCarthy

    Daniel Joseph McCarthy, 84, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.

    He was born March 9, 1929, in Rutland, the son of Daniel and Irene (Ballard) McCarthy.

    He graduated from Rutland High School in 1948.

    Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany and participated in the Berlin Airlift. He received an honorable discharge as a sergeant first class in 1952.

    He married Irene Dumas on July 1, 1966, in Rutland.

    He was employed as a patrolman by the Rutland Police Department for 28 years, and then was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 12 years, retiring in 1992. He had also worked part-time for many years at the A&P Store.

    He was a member of the United Church of West Rutland, and a life member of the American Legion Post #31, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #648.

    He was a longtime volunteer with RSVP, and enjoyed watching NASCAR racing.

    Survivors include his wife, Irene McCarthy of Rutland; a daughter, Maryann Bronson of Castleton; a brother, Raymond McCarthy of Rutland Town; grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

    Arrangements are pending with the Aldous Funeral Home. Burial will be in the South Village Cemetery in Dorset.
