Frances Ellen Corcoran Canfield, daughter of Bridget Welch Corcoran and Edward Corcoran, died Friday, August 30, 2013, at her home at the Gables in Rutland. Frances was a pioneer resident of the Gables at East Mountain, having lived there since its opening. Frances was a business and office machines teacher at Arlington High School, Pittsford High School and Otter Valley Union High School, from where she retired in June 1990. She was the yearbook advisor at Pittsford and Otter Valley. Prior to becoming a teacher, Frances was the waterfront director at Lake Paran in North Bennington, where she grew up. As a young woman, she was active in sports, including basketball, softball and field hockey, which she coached while a teacher in Arlington.
Frances attended UVM and graduated from Mary Washington College in 1945. She married John Shepard Canfield on August 22, 1949. Early in their marriage, they lived in Proctor and then moved to Rutland.
Frances loved to read and did so enthusiastically in her retirement. When her eyesight began to fail, she listened to books on tape. She loved to watch basketball, men’s and women’s, as well as baseball. She loved March Madness and knew all the teams, players and coaches. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society of Women Teachers and the Vermont Association of Retired Business Teachers. She was Vermont Business Teacher of the Year in 1990. Family and faith defined her.
Frances is survived by her children, William Canfield and wife Nancy of Rutland Town, Mary Ellen Roy and husband Bill of Pepperell, Mass., Carolyn Godbout and husband Bob of Rutland Town, and Joan LaSante and husband Bill of West Rutland; by her grandchildren, Ryan Canfield, Lyndsey Canfield and Josh Moore, Nadine Roy and Rick Bogdahn, Kerry Roy, Stacey and Ben Colegrove, Daniel Godbout and Rachel Driscoll, as well as Rachelle and Mark Venter; as well as her great-grandchildren, Kaulah, Jared, Roger, Samantha, Emelia, Sorel and Ruan.
Visiting hours will be held Monday (today) from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Rutland. Officiating will be Rev. Daniel Lokanga, pastor. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery in Bennington.
