    Marjorie Elaine Burton, 81, a resident of Rutland, died Sunday, September 8, 2013, at the Mountain View Center, following a brief illness.

    Marge was born on September 6, 1932, in Rutland, VT, son of Richard and Madeline (McKirryher) Burton.

    She attended schools in Rutland and Middletown Springs.

    She was previously married to Francis R. McNolty of Rutland. They had five children: Sylvia, Michael, Cathleen, Maureen, and Richard. She subsequently married William Goderwis in Rutland. Both Mr. McNolty and Mr. Goderwis predeceased her.

    Marjorie is survived by her five children: Sylvia Power (Venne) and her husband, Dennis of Johnson City, NY; Michael of North Clarendon, VT; Cathleen Seaton and her husband, John of Palm Coast, FL; Maureen Van Buren and her husband, Ron of Gansevoort and East Worcester, NY; and Richard and his wife, Darya of Poultney, VT. Marge is survived by two brothers, Delford of South Dakota, and Henry of Maine. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Nicholas and Katherine Seaton, Paul and Rebecca Venne, Jason and Katelyn McNolty, her great-grandchildren, Cody Whittemore, Audrey Wing, and Caydence Wing, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents and husbands, Marjorie was predeceased by a brother, Richard L. Burton.

    Marjorie’s first job was at Seward Family Restaurant in Rutland, shortly after it opened. In later years, she worked at the Park Pharmacy. In 1977, Marge started working as the receptionist at the Howard Bank on Merchants Row in Rutland, a position she held until her retirement. After retiring, Marge volunteered in the genealogy library at the Bennington Museum, and for other various local organizations in both the Rutland and Bennington area.

    Marge enjoyed gardening, square dancing, and playing her piano or organ. She created many beautiful gardens, complete with water features that graced her own residences, as well as those of a number of friends and family. She was also an accomplished and prolific artist, winning a number of awards at the Vermont State Fair for her still life and landscape paintings. In addition, Marge was also passionate about genealogy, spending countless hours researching her family tree.

    Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at the Tossing Funeral Home, 39 Washington St., in Rutland. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 18 Lincoln Ave., Rutland. Interment will take place at East Clarendon Cemetery.

    Memorial contributions may be made to Bayada Hospice, 56 Merchants Row, Rutland, VT 05701; or a charity of one’s choice.

    Arrangements are under the direction of Tossing Funeral Home.
