    SPRINGFIELD — Russell J. Farmer, 89, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at his home.

    He was born Jan. 5, 1924, in Windsor, the son of Merrill and Martha (Hale) Farmer.

    He graduated from Chester High School in 1942.

    Mr. Farmer served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

    On June 28, 1952, he married Joan Hendrickson in Perkinsville.

    He was employed as time study manager with Jones and Lamson Machine Tool Co. in Springfield, retiring in 1986 after 30 years of service. In North Springfield, he then worked consulting for Fellows Gear Shaper Co. for a few years and later driving for Woodbury Florist for nine years.

    Mr. Farmer enjoyed skiing, gardening and woodworking.

    Survivors include his wife of Springfield; a grandson; several nieces and nephews.

    He was predeceased by a son, Steven, in 2012 and three sisters, Carol Reid, Claire Farnum and Marilyn McCoy.

    The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield and officiated by Ernest “Puggy” Lamphere.

    Burial will be at a later date in Pleasantview Cemetery in Chester.
