    BENNINGTON — Steven M. Spencer, 74 , died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at his residence.

    He was born June 7, 1940, in Bennington, the son of Glenn and Hazel (Boullais) Spencer.

    He received his education in Bennington, and was a graduate of Bennington High School.

    Following high school, he served in the U.S. Navy.

    He married the former Carolyn Hart on Sept. 12, 1964, in Bennington. She died Dec. 25, 2007.

    For many years he was employed as a machinist at the Union Carbide Corporation in Bennington, from which he retired.

    An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping.

    He was a member of the Hale Mountain Rod and Gun Club in Shaftsbury. He also enjoyed four-wheeling and was a member of VASA.

    Survivors include a son, Chad Spencer and a daughter, Shelley Sherman, both of Bennington; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Gail Sawyer of Essex Junction; and a brother, Mark Spencer of Bennington.

    The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at 2 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27.

    Burial with military honors will take place at Park Lawn Cemetery

    Memorial contributions may be made to the Hale Mountain Rod and Gun Club through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
