    Credit where

    credit is due

Kudos for the Times Argus and its Sept. 27 editorial, “Breaking the Fever,” to call it as they see it in the second-to-last paragraph that mentions the racism that has generated much of the “fanatical anti-government conservatism,” especially in the Southern states. This resentment of the federal government has been there all along but not to the degree we see today.

In my opinion, the reason that the national mainstream media has been loathe to discuss this reaction is probably for fear of offending those mentioned above and also being accused of “race baiting” by some ultra-right commentators. This is a less-than-courageous corporate editorial stance. I also think that many of us have suspected this phenomenon, but have been reluctant to express it out of a reverse political correctness.
