Government shutdown protest in Rutland todayOctober 10,2013Members of a federal employee union are forming a picket line in downtown Rutland today to protest the ongoing government shutdown.
Ten days into a shutdown brought about by a failure in Washington to agree on a new budget, members of the American Federation of Government Employees local plan to gather at 11:45 a.m. in front of the Social Security Administration office located in the Asa Bloomer Building on Merchants Row.
Protest organizers say the event is designed to urge Congress to pass a continuing resolution that will allow vital government programs and services to restart.
“We need Congress to do what they were elected to do and pass a budget that allows the federal government to function. Debates over increasing the debt ceiling and implementing the Affordable Care Act should not jeopardize federal programs and services upon which millions of Americans depend,” wrote Gail Earley-Renaud, vice president of the union chapter which represents federal employees in Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire.MORE IN This Just InRICHARD'S POOR ALMANACK: On this day in 1898, Nelson Miles leads American troops into Puerto Rico during Spanish-American War, Bob Dylan electrifies Newport Folk Festival in 1965, author and longshoreman Eric Hoffer born this day in 1902. 0Rutland Herald content editor Rich Alcott uploads astronomic, historic and epigrammatic data...
