    Castleton board meets with counsel

CASTLETON — The Castleton Select Board will meet tonight with its bond counsel to talk about the town’s vote last November to approve a $750,000 bond for renovation of the old town office building.

The meeting is set to begin at 6 p.m. at the temporary town office building.

Voters approved the bond to renovate 556 Main St., but bond attorney Jack Facey has said a comment the night before the vote by Select Board Chairman Thomas Ettori has created doubt about the validity of the vote.

There were two bonds on the ballot last November — one for $750,000 and another for $210,000.

Ettori, answering a question from the audience asking whether both bonds had to pass for the renovations to proceed, said that if both bonds did not pass, there wouldn’t be enough money to renovate the building.

The town then approved the $750,000 bond but voted down the $210,000 bond.

The issue was considered dead until two new selectmen were elected in March and resurrected the renovation plans.

The board will discuss the issue with Facey at this special meeting at which public comment is expected to not be taken.
