SPRINGFIELD — Thomas E. McDermott, 84, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born Sept. 24, 1929, in Gardiner, Maine, the son of William Thomas and Doris Evelyn (Nowell) McDermott.
He attended schools in Gardiner, and graduated from Gardiner High School. He also graduated from the New England Conservatory with a degree in music; Bentley College of Business with a degree in business; and later from the University of Maine with a master’s degree in music appreciation.
He served in the Army National Guard during the Korean War era, and was stationed in Japan.
He married his wife Marilyn in 1960. She predeceased him in 1976.
He was employed as superintendent of music for the Portland (Maine) school system for many years, retiring in 1980.
He moved to Vermont in 1984, and lived in Chester for 12 years before moving to Springfield.
He played piano at the Chester Congregational Church for 12 years. He also played piano at several Vermont resorts and inns, and for the Springfield Senior Center, Meals on Wheels, Adult Day and on SAPA-TV.
Survivors include a son, Shawn McDermott of California; three daughters, Mara Johnson of Louisiana, Maya McDermott of New York, and Stacey McDermott of California; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his wife Marilyn, he was predeceased by two brothers, Francis and Henry.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield. The Rev. Peter Williams, pastor, will officiate.
Friends may call Friday, Nov. 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield, where arrangements are being handled.
Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Yarmouth, Maine, at a later date.
