Vt. encourages more landowners to open to hunting
State wants more
land for hunters
BENNINGTON — The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife is encouraging landowners to make their properties available to hunters.
The department says amount of posted land has roughly doubled between 1971 and 2011, about 100,000 acres to between 200,000 and 230,000.
Hunting license sales have also been on the decline, from about 91,000 licenses sold in 1987 to about 73,500 in 2004.
Recent legislation has given landowners the option to use “hunting by permission” signs, which work similar to posted signs but are more inviting. The signs are still being worked on.
