• Bridge renamed to honor veterans

    NEWPORT — The city of Newport has renamed its Long Bridge the Veterans Memorial Long Bridge.

    Newport Mayor Paul Monette and others were part of Monday’s dedication, timed to draw as many of the veterans and their family members as possible to participate with city officials.

    The bridge was recently rebuilt by the state. It connects downtown Newport with Glen Road and Western Avenue, the most convenient route from downtown to the access road to Interstate 91.
