BENNINGTON — A $5,000 warrant has been issued for the arrest of a local man who got into a fight with a police officer Tuesday and then failed to appear in court Wednesday.

Alvin Aiken Jr., 34, of Bennington, was due in Bennington district court Wednesday to be arraigned on misdemeanor charges of violation of an abuse prevention order, violation of conditions of release, resisting arrest and assault on a law enforcement officer.

After he failed to appear, Bennington County Deputy State’s Attorney Jennifer Barrett asked for an arrest warrant for $5,000 which was granted by Judge Nancy Corsones. Barrett said police had been looking for Aiken.

“Not only are we concerned right now that he’s going to harm himself or someone else, we believe that he’s a flight risk and we’ve been trying to track him down since this morning,” Barrett said.

In an affidavit, Cpl. Andy Hunt of the Bennington Police Department said police had been called around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday by a woman who has an abuse prevention order against Aiken. The woman said Aiken was outside the door of her Bennington home.

Hunt said when he got to the home, he found Aiken bleeding from what Hunt believed were self-inflicted wounds caused by a straight razor that Aiken was holding. Hunt said he ordered Aiken to drop the razor but Aiken refused and told Hunt, “You’re going to have to shoot me.”

Because of the presence of the razor, Hunt said he struck Aiken and “performed a takedown maneuver.” Hunt said Aiken continued to resist and he needed the help of other police officers to take Aiken into custody.

Aiken was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries, Hunt said.
