    Austen lecture

    offered Tuesday

The Rutland Free Library’s First Wednesday program is on a Tuesday this month.

The lecture by Dartmouth College Professor James Heffernan, titled “In Want of A Wife: Romance and Realism in Pride and Prejudice,” was originally scheduled for Wednesday but was switched to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Heffernan will speak on social relations in Jane Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice.” Heffernan teaches English and writing at Dartmouth, and has written many books and lectured around the world.

First Wednesday is held — usually — on the first Wednesday of every month from October through May in nine regional hub communities statewide, featuring speakers of national and regional renown. The program is free, accessible to people with disabilities, and open to the public.

The Vermont Department of Libraries is the statewide underwriter of First Wednesday.
