BURLINGTON - Vermont prosecutors and defense attorneys are in talks to settle charges filed against a man accused of setting fire to the steeple of a landmark Burlington church.

The attorney for Alaiksandr Bychkou says the talks are preliminary.

But attorney Mark Kaplan says "we think it's worth making the effort."

The 32-year-old Bychkou is being held for lack of $250,000 bail on second degree arson and burglary charges in connection with an Oct. 23 fire that destroyed the steeple of the College Street Congregational Church.

The Burlington Free Press reported that Chittenden County Deputy State's Attorney Mary Morrissey says the case will either be resolved next week or the pre-trial legal process will get underway.
