    POULTNEY — George Joseph Taran, 85, passed away Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, to be with his wife, Josephine, surrounded by his family and his best friend, Bill.

    George was born July 9, 1928, in Poultney, Vt., the son of Joseph and Bertha (Zmuda) Taran.

    He attended Poultney High School, class of 1947.

    George was a military police officer serving in the Army Air Corps, where he received the World War II Victory medal.

    Following his discharge, George was employed at General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y. He was owner and operator of Taran Brothers’ Slate Quarry and later owned George Taran and Son Construction Company. George then became the supervisor of grounds at Hackley School in Tarrytown, N.Y., and finished his career as owner and operator of George Taran Slate Products.

    George married Josephine Gloss in 1952, and celebrated 57 years of marriage, until her death in 2009.

    George is survived by his five children: daughters, Susan Quinones, Debbie Taran, Sandra Brown, and Anmarie Porter, and son, George Taran Jr.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

    George was one of the founders of the first Poultney Rescue Squad, and served for several years as a squad member. He was an active member of the Poultney American Legion Post 39, the VFW, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

    George’s greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with his family and friends.

    A memorial service will be celebrated Thursday, December 26, at 1 p.m. at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in Poultney, VT. Immediately following the service, a reception will be held at the Poultney American Legion Post 39.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Young at Heart Senior Center, Poultney, VT 05764.
