John P. Mulcahy
John P. Mulcahy, 96, of Rutland, died peacefully Friday, January 24, 2014, at Rutland Regional Medical Center, surrounded by family.
He was born in Rutland, August 25, 1917, the son of Michael and Bridget (Maloney) Mulcahy.
John was a decorated World War II, U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.
He married the love of his life, Agnes M. (Matt) Mulcahy, on June 26, 1946. She preceded him in death, December 14, 2004, after 58 years of marriage.
He was employed for 31 years as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, and was a member and minister of the altar at St. Peter’s Church for many years.
For those who were blessed to have known him, John will be remembered for his remarkable faith and dedication to God, the Church and the Boston Red Sox. True to his Irish heritage, he loved sharing stories, telling jokes and showing generosity to others in need. He was a fine gentleman who will be dearly missed.
Surviving are two sons, John Mulcahy of Rutland and Stephen Mulcahy and his wife, Sandra, of Rutland; five daughters, Patricia Lillibridge and husband, Albert, of Fredricksburg, VA, Joan Furlough of Midlothian, VA, Mary McCullough and husband, Dean, of Rutland, Debra Mulcahy of Rutland, and Lorraine Oliver and husband, Ben, of Virginia Beach, VA; eleven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond, and by four sisters, Theresa, Rita, Patricia and Mary Margaret.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland
There are visiting hours. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 29, at Clifford Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 30, at St. Peter’s Church in Rutland. Officiating will be the Rev. Thomas Houle, pastor.
Burial will be at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Brandon.
