NOFA holds winter conference
BURLINGTON — The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont will hold its annual Winter Conference on Feb. 15-17 at the University of Vermont campus in Burlington.
The conference will include dozens of workshops on vegetable, fruit and livestock farming as well as gardening, marketing, business, community-building and more.
The event is not just for commercial farmers, who make up only half of the 1,500 participants. The conference also features many aspiring farmers with differing amounts of experience.
A large part of the conference workshops are not even directed at farmers. Homesteaders, educators, home and community gardeners, activists and techies all play a role at the conference. For example, this year’s event includes a farm and food system “hackathon” with the purpose of taking a closer look at the nexus of technology and our food system.
The nonfarming workshops include “Introduction to Small-Batch Vegetable Fermentation,” “Creating a Fair Farm: What Does Food Justice Mean and Why Do We Need it in Vermont,” and “Indoor Gardening: Seed to Salad in Seven Days.”
Founded in 1971, NOFA-VT is a nonprofit member-based organization working to grow local farms, healthy foods and strong communities in Vermont. Registration for this year’s Winter Conference will begin at 8 a.m. Feb. 16. However, those who register for the event by today will save $20 per day off walk-in prices. Workshops and speakers will start at 9 a.m. Feb. 16.
