    Richard Edward Crossman, 78, of Rutland, died after a long battle with lung cancer on February 9, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was a pillar of strength to his entire family. Richard will be remembered as a “Jack of All Trades,” a true Red Sox fan and loyal friend to all.

    Born in Rutland on September 5, 1935, he was the son of Paul J. and Janet (Hebert) Crossman Sr.

    He was a 1953 graduate of Rutland High School.

    In 1954, he joined the U.S. Navy. He was stationed aboard the USS Elokomin, AO55 for four years, and made lasting friendships with his shipmates. After being discharged in 1958, Richard worked for Randall Company Inc. as a steamfitter. He later joined Local 693 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union and retired in 1994.

    He married Yvonne Senecal on November 19, 1960, at St. Peter Church in Rutland. They were married for 53 years, and have five children.

    Richard was a Lifetime Member of the American Legion Post 31, the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars; he was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 1122. He is a member of the USS Elokomin Crewmembers Association, and of St. Bridget Church in West Rutland.

    He and Yvonne loved to dance. In his leisure time, he enjoyed doing odd jobs around the house, working in the garden, meeting his buddies for golf in the summer and coffee in the winter, and spending time with his grandkids.

    He is survived by his loving wife, Yvonne; their children, Karyn Crossman Colburn of Rutland; Laura and husband, Dr. Robert Kolodzej of Rutland Town; Margaret Eddy and fiancé, David W. Powers of Rutland Town; James R. Crossman and wife, Missy of Rutland Town; and Janette and husband, Eric Poczobut of Clarendon; and his brother, Paul J. Crossman Jr. of Rutland. He was a wonderful Poppy to his sixteen grandchildren, Amanda, Katrina, Jake, Seth, Melissa, Maryesa, Kristen, Bryce, Briann, Jared, Devin, Mariah, Leah, Rob, Keith and Alexa; his great-granddaughter, Carly, and several nieces and nephews.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, February 13, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Bridget Church in West Rutland. Officiating will be the Rev. Vincent Coppola, pastor. A reception will follow. The burial will take place in the spring at the East Clarendon Cemetery. A reception will follow.

    Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, February 12, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
