Vermont State Police said they are investigating the death of a 2-year-old Poultney girl. Police said at about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday they received a call from Rutland Regional Medical Center regarding an injured child who had been brought to the emergency room.

Required by law as a mandated reporter of child abuse, a hospital staff member advised that Dezirae Sheldon, 2, was brought into the hospital exhibiting signs of head trauma, police said.

The child was taken, later the same day, to the intensive care unit at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., for further medical treatment and died Friday, according to police.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause and manner of death, police said. The Vermont Department for Children and Families, along with the Rutland County state’s attorney’s office were notified of the incident and are working closely with investigators.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Vermont State Police in Rutland at 773-9101.
