CASTLETON — Voters sent a message Tuesday, electing three new members to sit on the Select Board — choosing Richard Combs, Joseph Bruno and Robert Spaulding.
In the race for the three-year Select Board seat, Combs defeated incumbent Wenger Rehlen 574-368, while Bruno and Spaulding received the most votes for the pair of one-year seats in a three-way race with Thomas Kearns.
Spaulding got 682 votes and Bruno received 538 votes to Kearns’ 400.
In a contested listers race, Nancy Trudo defeated Harry “Vince” Diamond 489-360.
“We asked the voters for an opinion on their leadership and they spoke,” Combs said.
The three winners ran as a team and Combs said now comes the hard part.
“We just got the easy part done,” Combs said. “The hard part remains. We need to build some bridges, which have been burnt lately. We need to move forward and heal this town.”
Spaulding, who is returning to the board after an eight-year layoff, said he’s a no-nonsense kind of guy and he wants some answers.
“We’ve got a bunch of issues here in Castleton,” Spaulding said. “The town office issue is a big thing, I want to see what the holdup is on the fire station and I want to know how we are going to reimburse the taxpayers.”
All 38 budget articles, which comprised the entire town budget, passed, as did all funding requests.
The Castleton-Hubbardton Union School District budget passed 608-491.
