Inmate fight leads to criminal charge

An inmate at the Rutland jail will face a new charge for allegedly striking another prisoner.

Vermont State Police say 26-year-old Joseph N. Shackett III struck fellow inmate Jacob Gero, 23, in the back of the head during a fight in the jail’s A pod on Monday afternoon.

Shackett, who is in jail for an alleged probation violation, was charged with simple assault and will appear in Rutland criminal court next month.

Shackett was out on probation for convictions on a number of offenses including simple assault on a law enforcement officer, retail theft and reckless endangerment, according to court records.
