    WEST RUPERT — William A. Matteson, 75, of West Rupert, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, March 29, 2014, at his residence.

    Born July 21, 1938, in West Rupert, he was the son of the late Claude and Ida (LaBatt) Matteson. Bill attended grammar school in West Rupert and then, Salem Washington Academy.

    Bill worked at Telescope Casual Furniture in Granville, N.Y., for 27 years and then went to work for Betcha Bus Co. driving school bus for the Mettowee, Rupert, Arlington schools until he retired in 2012.

    Bill was a member of the Rupert United Methodist Church, the Rupert Fire Company, the Adirondack Fiddlers and the Adirondack Bluegrass League. He enjoyed playing his guitar, singing, hunting and driving his old tractor around his property. Bill loved watching football, especially his favorite team, the New York Giants.

    In addition to his parents, Bill was also predeceased by two sons-in-law, Jimi Smith and Rick Hanna; his siblings, Donald Matteson, Patricia Greene, Almond Matteson and Claude Matteson.

    Bill is survived by his wife of 56 years, Vivian (Greene) Matteson; his children, Melissa Hanna of Midlothian, Va., Kathy Smith of Chesterfield, Va., Russell “Rusty” Matteson and his wife Mary of Hampton, N.Y., Tracy Lourie and her husband Mike of West Rupert and Sarah Matteson of West Rupert. He is also survived by a brother, Robert Matteson of Rupert; his sisters, Mary Forrett of Dummerston, Vt., Ruth Cary of Hebron, N.Y., and Geraldine Sherman of West Rupert; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

    Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the McClellan-Gariepy Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem, N.Y.

    A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2014, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Rupert Firehouse in Rupert, Vt.
