    Samuel Kelson

    BENNINGTON — Samuel C. Kelson, Jr. 89, a resident of Crescent Manor Care Centers in Bennington, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, after a long illness.

    He was born in Bennington Aug. 27, 1924, and was the son of the late Samuel Sr. and Sarah (Sanders) Kelson. He received his education in Bennington. Mr. Kelson served in the Marine Corps from Dec. 8, 1942, until Nov. 14, 1945. He married the former Eunice Hill in Bennington on Feb. 22, 1947. She predeceased him on June 12, 2013.

    Mr. Kelson was a former member of the Putnam Hose Co. (Bennington Fire Department) from 1955 until 1971. He has served as 1st lieutenant, 2nd lieutenant and foreman. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the American Legion, both in Bennington.

    Mr. Kelson was an avid NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt Sr. fan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and the daily coffees at McDonald’s.

    He is survived by his children: Sandra Tilley and her husband, Gary, of Cambridge, N.Y., Samuel and Anne Kelson of North Bennington, and Stanley Kelson of Pownal. One granddaughter who was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Kelson, Marcy Kelson, and her fiance, David Boschetti, of Bennington; six other grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews cousins.

    Beside his wife, Mr. Kelson is predeceased by his daughter, Dianne Kelson, and his daughter-in-law, Rose Marie Kelson.

    Graveside committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2014, at White Chapel Cemetery in Bennington, with Mr. Kenneth Coonradt, chaplain of the Vermont Veterans Home, officiating. There are no calling hours scheduled.

    Memorial contributions may be made to the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center and/or Crescent Manor Care Centers Residents Activities Fund through Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
