Poor treatment of park founder
I’ve known Michael Smith for 20-plus years and consider him a dear friend and a member of my family. Michael lived in my home during the first five years of the intensive creation and building of Pine Hill Park. His honesty, integrity and good work are beyond reproach. So, too, his good heart and his compassion for others.
The Rutland Herald chose to report in depth on his case yet basically ignored the positive results in the paper when Michael was exonerated. There has been silence from the Rutland Recreation Department after the dismissal of Michael’s case. The complete omission of Michael and his contributions to the park was evident in the April 21 article in the Herald (“16 miles of trails to bike, run and hike”), which sang its praises and its many possible outdoor offerings.
These are examples of the injustices done to a thoughtful and irreplaceable member of our community. Michael’s legacy will live on, and his absence from the park will only remind us that from Rutland, his home town, Michael deserved better.
