I am writing to ask Rutland City residents to please vote for the reduced school budget at the special election on Tuesday, May 13.

Why am I am voting yes? First, I learned that as Rutland City homestead taxpayers we actually only pay $5 million into the state Education Fund. Even our commercial and non-homestead taxpayers only pay in $8 million. Then we receive nearly $29 million back.

Why? City taxpayers benefit from the state’s education funding system because we have a small property tax base and many pupils.

In addition there are several other significant sources of revenue generated within the school department, not city taxpayers, that contribute to the $48 million operating budget annually. Basically a three-to-one match of our tax dollars pays for our entire school system.

Second, I believe we must continue to give Rutland’s kids great educational opportunities and programs that will shape them to be productive members of our community. Don’t we need this now more than ever? Please join me in voting yes.
