    Town mulls over

    water problems

ST. JOHNSBURY ó The town of St. Johnsbury has its share of water woes.

Officials said water and sewer users are facing more than $6 million in maintenance needs at the water filter and sewer treatment plants. And more than $1.5 million is needed to fix pipe problems at a water main.

Engineer Red Dufresne told the Caledonian Record that the townís three filtration tanks at the Stiles Pond filter plant are made of painted steel, which is rusting into the water supply. Thatís a $2 million replacement. Itís not clear how much longer the tanks will last.

Another problem is the Moose River water main, a primary water line thatís submerged, unsupported, in a river. Dufresne hopes it can be repaired before it ruptures.

Select Board members are discussing the problems.
