It is time for the Rutland Herald and elected officials of Rutland City to amend and correct what they have done to Michael Smith through personal attacks and barring Michael from his park. When I grew up in Rutland, the Herald was about reporting worthy of winning national awards. Letís get back to this type of reporting and start with rebuilding Michael Smithís image.

Similar to many of you reading this, I have known Michael for a long time. OK, perhaps even longer than many of you, as the years tally to 35. We were athletes together on the soccer fields and ski slopes. Our families knew of each other even longer back. It has been a friendship based on many things. Largely, it has also been about shared values of doing what is right and being there for people and communities unconditionally.

The Herald, city officials, the board of Pine Hill Park ó Iím not sure where to begin. Letís get back to thoughtful and public leadership that would be noteworthy statewide and nationally. Learn to overcome our circumstances and work with an extraordinary individual again.

There are a lot of us out there. People who know Michael and want him back in Rutland as he was before. Do the right thing.
