It’s been 30 years or so since I’ve owned a snowmobile. This year I decided to pick up a sled. What fun we had! Fun that would not have been possible if it weren’t for the generosity of the landowners who allow VAST to create the trail network that I rode on.

Thank you to the landowners in Poultney, Ira, West Rutland, Castleton and beyond who put up with the stream of smiling snowmobilers who transited your property. From the top of Herrick, or a hemlock-filled hollow, the alley behind Poultney’s Stewarts store and countless pristine farm meadows — each place an important and appreciated link in the big picture. Everyone should see the things I saw.

I hope we used you well and that as the snow melted, all signs of our high-revving presence disappeared.

Your sharing made winter feel short, and it was a real blessing.
