U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz will visit Rutland and Middlebury on Friday to take stock of efforts that Vermont's congressional delegation says are leading the nation in transforming energy systems from fossil fuels to sustainable energy.

Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders, Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy and Democratic Rep. Peter Welch will accompany Moniz at an energy summit at Middlebury College at 10 a.m. to discuss energy efficiency, renewable energy and climate change.

The energy secretary will then travel to Rutland where he will review renewable energy initiatives being undertaken in the city, according to Sanders office. The secretary is expected to participate in a press conference at 1:50 p.m. Friday at 60 Baxter St. in Rutland.
