    Man accused of

    assaulting child

BENNINGTON — A North Adams, Mass., man is being held in prison without bail after police said he repeatedly sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl in Bennington about four years ago.

Jesse LaFountain, 24, was arraigned in Bennington criminal court Monday on one felony count each of aggravated sexual assault on a person younger than 13, aggravated repeated sexual assault and aggravated repeated sexual assault on a child.

All three charges carry maximum terms of life in prison. The latter charge carries a mandatory minimum term of 25 years in prison.

In an affidavit, police said a 14-year-old girl was interviewed May 8 about allegations that LaFountain had sexually assaulted her when she was 11.

The girl told police she knew LaFountain because he was a friend of her mother and lived at their home from about October 2010 to June 2011. She said she hadn’t told anyone about what allegedly happened until the week that she spoke with police.

Police said LaFountain was interviewed May 28 and he told them he “did not really remember” anything sexual happening between himself and the girl.

LaFountain, who does not have a criminal history in Vermont, is being held in the Rutland jail.
