Green Mountain Power works to restore outages from storm
Green Mountain Power issued the following press release this morning:
Green Mountain Power has restored power to more than 20,000 customers who lost power during yesterday’s storm. The areas where damage was most extensive include towns along the Route 4 corridor, particularly around Poultney, Springfield, and Sunderland.
“The reported 70 mile per hour winds brought down hundreds of trees onto lines and broke dozens of poles,” said Dorothy Schnure, GMP corporate spokesperson. “Each of these events needs a line crew and a tree crew, and can take anywhere from 30 minutes to make repairs to half a day or more if the damage is extensive.”
Green Mountain Power crews worked through the night in difficult conditions, assisted by more than 110 contract lineworkers and tree trimmers. Fresh crews are arriving today from Canada and southern New England to keep an intensive effort to restore power as quickly as possible.
“We’ve made significant progress restoring power overnight and expect to get most customers restored by late today,” said Schnure. “But in the areas with severe damage, we expect to be working on restoring customers’ power well through the weekend.”
“For the latest information, we will post updates through Facebook, Twitter, and media announcements,” Schnure said. “We have put together a large contingent of workers to restore power as quickly as we can.”
GMP offered the following safety advice for the public when experiencing high winds and thunderstorms:
* Treat any downed line as if it is live and stay at least 50 feet away from the line, and keep children and pets away.
* Contact GMP at 1-888-835-4672 to report downed lines and your local first responders if the lines are blocking roadways.
