BENNINGTON — A local man is being held on $2,500 bail after police said he tried to mislead them about his true identity while they were conducting an investigation.

Orlando L. Vega, 27, of Bennington, was arraigned in Bennington criminal court on Monday on a felony count of impeding a public officer, one misdemeanor count each of giving false information to a police officer to attempt to implicate another person and disorderly conduct for fighting as well as two misdemeanor counts of violating the conditions of his release from custody.

In an affidavit, Cpl. Andy Hunt, of the Bennington Police Department, said police got a call around 8 p.m. Saturday from a woman who said a man she knew only as “Orlando” threatened her with a gun and a baseball bat on Pleasant Street.

While investigating, Hunt said he spoke with a man later identified as Vega outside a Pleasant Street apartment building. Hunt said Vega was uncooperative and gave him a false name of “Furnado Vaga.”

While the woman who made the complaint said he had taken a gun from his pants and pointed it up in the air and later waved a baseball bat while outside the apartment building, Hunt said police didn’t find any weapons.

The woman indicated she had no real previous relationship with Vega and claimed the incident started because she told him to stop giving her “dirty looks.”

Vega was charged May 5 with driving under the influence of alcohol, attempting to elude police and other related charges. One of the conditions of his release was that he not drink alcohol and submit to an alcosensor.

Hunt said he believed Vega had been drinking alcohol Saturday, but Vega refused to give a breath sample.

Vega is being held in the Rutland jail.
