MONTPELIER - The Conservation Law Foundation asked the Public Service Board on Monday to require Vermont Gas Systems to seek an amended certificate of public good for Phase I of its natural gas pipeline project.

In its filing, CLF cited a $35 million, or 40 percent, increase in the cost of the project. CLF also asked the board to require VGS to halt construction unless and until it receives an amended permit.

"Vermont Gas is obligated to seek approval for any substantial change to its project. A 40 percent cost increase is a substantial change that requires review," Sandra Levine, CLF senior attorney said in a statement.

Vermont Gas received PSB approval in December for Phase I of its Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project. Phase I would extend the pipeline from Chittenden to parts of Addison County, including Middlebury.
