CASTLETON - A 77-year-old man died Tuesday afternoon after an escaped bull chased him to the ground on a farm on East Hubbardton Road.

Interim Police Chief Steve Dechen said today that Harold Stanyon was pronounced dead at Rutland Regional Medical Center after being chased by a 1,250-pound brown Swiss bull that he was boarding on his small farm.

Dechen said the bull escaped and began chasing Stanyon who was returning home from jogging.

Witnesses told police that Stanyon fell to the ground and the bull stepped over him, but no trampling or goring injuries were found on Stanyon's body.

Rather, police and the deceased man's doctor believe that Stanyon may have died from a heart attack.

Dechen said an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The bull, which Dechen said was owned by Glen Mar Dairy, was led from the scene by witnesses who harnessed the animal minutes after Stanyon fell to the ground.

Dechen said the owners quickly "got rid" of the animal.
