PITTSFORD — Else Hirschmann, 81, died peacefully July 16, 2014, surrounded by her immediate family at Rutland Regional Medical Center after a long illness. She was born February 21, 1933, in Bad Honnef, Germany.

She was married to Helmut Hirschmann over 60 years and moved to Pittsford, Vt., in 1981. She was a mother and homemaker after working as a seamstress in her early life during the years just after the war in Cologne, Germany.

Most important in her life was always her family, which she loved to chronicle with photos throughout the years and she always kept in contact with her many friends and family in Germany.

Else always enjoyed travelling and one of the highlights of her many years with Helmut was their road trip to Alaska crisscrossing the United States.

She was most happy surrounded by flowers and loved working in her garden. Her artistic talents showed in the paintings and for a few years, she volunteered at the art department of the Lothrop Elementary School.

She is survived by her husband, Helmut; her sons, Gerd Hirschmann with his wife Gisela of Chittenden, Rolf Hirschmann with his wife Ursula of Pittsford; her daughter, Birgit Hirschmann with her partner Hamlyn of Berlin, Germany; her grandchildren, Eva with husband Jonathan, Joshua, Lea, Fionn and Lovis; and was most proud of her great-granddaughter, Evelyn.

A funeral service will be held at St. Alphonsus Church in Pittsford, Vt., on Wednesday, July 23, at 11 a.m., immediately followed by her burial in the St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Friends and family may gather at the home of Rolf and Ursula Hirschmann afterwards to share stories and memories.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lake Sunapee Bank in Pittsford to benefit the art department of the Lothrop Elementary School in Pittsford, Vt.

Arrangements are being handled by the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.
