Heavy rain floods Chester roads
Staff Report | July 29,2014
CHESTER — Local police and firefighters had their hands full — and wet — Monday when heavy rain flooded several main roads.
Authorities temporarily shut down a section of Route 11 west of the Chester Rod and Gun Club and Route 103 north in the Stone Village area when storm water covered the pavement shortly after 4 p.m.
Firefighters parked one of their trucks in the village to signal problems along the road leading to Andover and Weston.
“Heavy rain & runoff is causing problems on Routes 11 and 103 in the Chester area,” the Twitter feed for 511VT told motorists. “Roads may become blocked in some areas.”
By 4:40 p.m., Vermont State Police said Route 103 from Gassetts to the Stone Village was closed because of flash flooding.
A half-hour later, the National Weather Service in Burlington canceled its severe thunderstorm watch for the state but continued its flash flood warning for Windsor County.
The state chapter of the American Red Cross, for its part, was said to have opened a shelter at the local fire station, according to scanner reports.
