    WWI mementos

Joe Doran, who resides in Hydeville, and I are currently writing a book on the Slate Valley of Vermont just prior to, during and after World War I. The towns covered in this book will be Castleton, Fair Haven, Poultney, West Castleton and Pawlet.

We are in search of photographs, old letters, diaries and other memorabilia in regards to the men from these towns who served during the war. We would also be interested in photographs, letters and diaries from the families of these men who were living in those towns during this time.

We currently have a handful of letters from soldiers, as well as pictures and newspaper stories from some of them. A few of these men had left the area prior to WWI due to the decline that was taking place in the slate industry and when the war came, enlisted in Hartford, Conn.

If you are unsure of what you have, please feel free to contact us anyway and let us take a look. The One Hundred Year Anniversary of the United States entry into WWI will be coming soon and this book will explore the role the men of this area and their families played in that war, the impact it had on them, as well as the impact it had on this area of Vermont.

You can contact me at 353-7184 and Joe Doran at 265-3208.
