Although I was glad to see that Sen. Sanders and Republican Jeff Miller have finally agreed on a critically needed bill to fund the Department of Veteran Affairs, I wonder where these two congressmen, who head their respective Veteran Affairs Committees, have been for the past several years. As a Vietnam-era Army veteran who was denied VA benefits, I feel strongly that those two individuals were asleep at their post while all this was going on. Perhaps, they were spread too thinly or failed to see the significance of the problems. We may never know. In my case, although I was on standby at Fort Gordon, Ga., to participate in the Bay of Pigs Cuban invasion, I never did see combat. Thus, when denied VA benefits, I have no ill feelings, as I thought there were many more needy solders than I. My hope now is that since the VA issues have reached a critical congressional level, that appropriate funding will continue to be forthcoming to all those in need.
