READING — Harold “Bud” Singleton, 94, of Reading, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, at Valley Regional Hospital.
Mr. Singleton was born in Truxton, N.Y., to Charles and Mabel Atkinson Singleton. At 17, he came to Reading and lived with his mother’s sister and husband, Arthur and Florence Davis, where he later met and married Mary Senna, his wife of 71 years.
He served in the U.S. Army 76th Division as a medic in World War II.
After the war, Mr. and Mrs. Singleton owned and operated Singleton’s Store in Reading for 27 years. They went on to build another successful store in Proctorsville and were honored in 1993 as Vermont Retail Grocers of the Year. They retired in 1999.
Mr. Singleton enjoyed bird hunting and storytelling.
He was predeceased by his son, Charles.
He leaves his wife, Mary, his five children: Joan Racicot, Robert Singleton, Tom Singleton, and twin sons John and Jerry Singleton.
Also, he was survived by seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial visitation was held Thursday, Aug. 21, at Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock. A funeral Mass was celebrated Friday, Aug. 22 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Windsor.
