Iíve always enjoyed the art scene in Rutland County, particularly around Brandon, near where I live. The Brandon Arts Guild takes on the most active role where the individual artists keep Brandon vital and creatively alive.

Now there is another artistic gem in Brandon called the Compass Music and Arts Foundation, a wonderful complement to the existing art presence. A few years ago, Stephen and Edna Sutton purchased a building and extensively renovated it into an amazing space. It is just 1Ĺ miles north of downtown. Just off Route 7 North and Arnold District Road, this former infirmary of the now extinct Brandon Training School houses a cafť, open from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, permanent and transitory art exhibits, classes in painting and dancing, items for sale made by two resident seamstresses, a dressmaker and a doll maker, a classical music collection and CDs, sheet music and books for sale and to enjoy, plus entertainment space.

At the Compass, Iíve enjoyed a concert by Maiden Vermont, two one-day watercolor classes, several delicious lunches and a chance to see several artistsí work in photography, quilting and painting. Just stepping inside the Compass feels exciting and relaxing at the same time.

Check it out for yourself. Contact information: 333 Jones Drive, Park Village, Brandon VT 05733; 247-4295; www.cmafvt.org
